Alan Edwards and partner Elaine are one of the most influential duos in British hairdressing, with over 30 years of experience in the industry and a reputation for incredible showmanship. In a neat example of history repeating itself, Alan and Elaine – former winners themselves of the L’Oréal Colour Trophy 1993 – went on to coach the youngest members of their art team to win the Colour Trophy once again on its 50th anniversary. The Alan Edwards salon has also presented at the Alternative Hair Show every year since 1992.
Alan’s main role as art director is coaching, managing and directing the art team, as well as extensively presenting educational seminars and sharing the Alan Edwards philosophy and passion. “We are lucky to work in an industry that allows young people to open their own business,” he says, “but I do feel it’s a lot harder to do that today than when I opened in 1987. You need to be passionate about hair, but you also have to have a solid business mind, too. It’s important to have that balance between creativity and entrepreneurialism.”
