There’s been quite the spotlight on curly and afro hair types lately, with full-bodied conversations around the social, historical and racial significance of afro hair and a petition, started by Blue Tit stylist Jemima Bradley, to make afro hair experience (styling, cutting, care and colouring) mandatory at all levels of the NVQ syllabus and in Apprenticeships Standards education. She wants to help ensure that in the near future, all trainees are equipped with a working knowledge of afro hair, and so are capable of giving the very best service to any individual who sits in their chair.
Some of you, of course, are already ahead of the curve, skilfully defining and manipulating curl patterns and textures to create beautiful and sophisticated looks, and using styling techniques such as braiding, plaiting, twisting and cane-rowing to bring the highest level of artistry to your session work.
And it’s you that we want to celebrate in Creative HEAD’s Most Wanted awards with the Most Wanted Texture Expert category – brand new for 2021 and sponsored by Bumble & bumble.
Open to both salon-based and session stylists, the category will showcase stand-out work with textured hair, whether creatively or in the education fields, with judges being asked to look specifically for a progressive approach.
Most Wanted Texture Expert gives you the opportunity to outline your skills, passions and achievements with textured hair, with image galleries illustrating the full range of your work and two case studies, undertaken since June 2019, that demonstrate your capabilities and forward-thinking; at least one of the case studies should be a project you embarked on during the pandemic.
“Skills with textured hair are important, relevant and open up many doors,” says Creative HEAD publisher Catherine Handcock. “We are excited to introduce this new Most Wanted category that specifically champions artists who recognise and enhance the beauty in afro and curly hair and are shaping a new, more diverse, culture in UK and Irish hairdressing.”
