Alex Barron-Hough’s NYFW Diary

What happens on tour most certainly doesn’t stay on tour! Photographer and TIGI Creative Team backstage paparazzo, Alex Barron-Hough, will be taking us on a journey from New York to Paris, as he shoots the team’s show antics. Here, he shares his NYFW diary…

Tuesday 5 February

Arriving in New York we go straight to the hotel to dump our bags. We’re staying in the Soho Mondrian, which is just around the corner from the TIGI Academy. We go straight to the academy to meet with TIGI Creative Team members, Thomas Osborn [US education director], Heath Grout [US creative director] and Richy Kandasamy [US technical creative director] and get ourselves organised for the shows.

Wednesday 6 February

Nick goes to the Katie Gallagher hair test. There’s some bonkers stuff going on in Katie’s studio and with the hair.  Nick’s gelling the hair back from the face, setting it into twisted knots and then clamping it with irons.

Heath and Thomas prep for the Wildfox show on Capitale 130 Bowery at The Grand. The whole theme around the show is The Great Gatsby and the girls are having fun. It’s like being at a speakeasy. Apart from the hanging around it’s really enjoyable. Everyone else goes out to dinner afterwards but I just get room service and sort out the day’s imagery. By the time I’ve edited what I’ve shot, filed it and sent it off to all the relevant people, it’s 3am.

Thursday 7 September

We start the day at Nicholas K in the Lincoln Center, The Studio. The backstage call time is 6am and show time is 9am. Nick is leading the show, and Nicholas K is the official opening show for Mercedes Benz NYFW. It’s very exciting and there are loads of people milling around.

We’re back to the TIGI Academy to prep the Haus Alkire show. Heath shot the Haus Alkire look book so he knows the designers well and the atmosphere is very friendly, even with the usual stress going on.

We move on to Haus Alkire on 458 Broome Street. The actual show is in a shop near the academy. The backstage call time is 2pm and the show time is 4.30pm, and there are eight models.

Friday 8 February

Up and out to the Katie Gallagher show at the Standard Hotel – it goes off brilliantly so it’s a good start, but the weather forecast is terrible. The biggest snowstorm for years is predicted to hit NYC. People are being sent home from work early and the whole subway system is due to close by late afternoon – and we’ve got a show at 9pm!

As they say, the show must go on, so we trudge through the snow and fortunately there is an audience, but it’s not easy and we’re very happy to get back to our hotel.

On to Parkchoonmoo at the Lincoln Center, The Studio. There are 20 models walking and Nick is heading up the hair team once more.

Saturday 9 February

Mara Hoffman today at the Lincoln Center, The Stage. We’ve been working with Mara for several seasons and Nick has a good rapport with the designer. Her clothes are always beautiful and she allows a lot of creativity when it comes to the hair.

Monday 11 February

We had a fairly free day yesterday, so I could relax. That meant spending most of the day editing what I’ve shot and prepping for a shoot today. I got to eat a proper meal and went to bed at a reasonable time!

We’re shooting in the TIGI Academy to capture all the steps of the key looks we’ve done since arriving in New York. This is a first, normally we use backstage images or do the shoot in London. But this way we can involve all the US team members who have been working backstage at the shows, doing this so quickly really reinforces what you’ve done and allows you to refine ideas so they’ll work for our hairdressers.

Then it’s another late night editing everything! London beckons…
