Meet Scotland’s colour queens – L’Oréal Colour Trophy 2017 champions, Linton & Mac

On June 5, 2017, Aberdeen’s Linton & Mac were named L’Oréal Colour Trophy UK champions. Now that the confetti has settled, the win has truly sunk in and the 2018 competition is on the horizon, we spoke to the triumphant colourist behind the stunning moss-green mullet, Sarah Black, about her whirlwind six months.

First things first, Sarah – let’s go right back to your winning moment. How did it feel when your name was announced?
I was absolutely gobsmacked! I really just couldn’t believe it, and it was genuinely the most amazing, almost indescribable, feeling.

What happened in the days after your win?
I travelled back to Scotland with the Linton & Mac team and we were all on cloud nine. I then returned to the salon and went back to working life wondering if the experience had all been an incredible dream!

Had you entered L’Oréal Colour Trophy before?
No this was my first time, so to win was truly unbelievable.

Your almost dusty-green, textured mullet was a truly unique look. How did you decide on your entry and know your choice of colour and style was ‘the one’?
I was inspired by the Pantone Colour of the Year 2017, Greenery, which then led me to experiment with different depths and intensities of green to find something quite muted and organic. As for the style – after seeing quite a lot of 80s interpretations of the mullet on the runways, it seemed so wrong it was right!

How has winning L’Oréal Colour Trophy shaped your 2017 and 2018 so far?
It’s been the most incredible experience of my career. I only joined Linton & Mac in January 2017, and this process has meant I’ve been able to work closely with my Linton & Mac L’Oréal Colour Trophy team over the past six months. It’s been an unrivalled experience. I feel like this award has made us all feel unstoppable as a brand. Linton & Mac is only two years old, so we’re all looking forward to what the future brings us as a team.

It’s obviously meant a huge amount to your team, but we’re interested to know – how have clients reacted to your win?
My clients have been my biggest supporter from day one, and from the moment I got through to the regional heat through to winning on the night they have been with me every step of the way.

What was the winners’ shoot experience like?
Paris was unforgettable! To see the winning look brought back to life in two different incarnations was a fantastic experience. The team we worked with was amazing too, and it felt like we were working with people we had known for years.

Sounds like you’ve gained some firm friends along the way! What have you learned from the whole experience?
To be true to yourself, and you just might surprise yourself.

Any tips for those thinking of entering this year’s contest?
Go for it – and don’t hold back. Stay authentic to your vision and believe in yourself a little bit more, because you never know, next year might just be your year.

That’s an awesome outlook. So, what’s next for you?
I have just been promoted to Colour Specialist in the salon with a view to heading up the in-salon Art Team, so we’re looking forward to showing Aberdeen and the UK hairdressing industry that Linton & Mac is a colour force to be reckoned with!

And finally: Can you sum up your LCT17 experience in three words?
Crazy. Colourful. Cool!
