People then hair!
This was actually shot in 2004, by the photographer Tim Walker, whom I’d commissioned for this personal project. I had spent over a year researching and casting horses before I found Sandokan. I find horses fascinating and studied everything I could about their behaviour, character and all the dynamics of horse hair. I was actually terrified as I did this but horses have a high level of emotional intelligence and I remained honest with Sandokan about how I felt – if I’d gone in pretending I was confident, he would have sensed it and it would have been game over. I gained a great bond and trust with him, which, I believe, enabled me to create much more freely. Franca Sozzani wanted to publish this story in Italian Vogue if we would have revisited the shoot to add more clothes, but I declined. It was never about fashion.
